Every 4 minutes, someone in Australia is diagnosed with blood cancer or a bone marrow failure syndrome (Leukaemia Foundation, 2024). 🩸
These conditions—such as aplastic anaemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, and Fanconi anaemia—can be life-threatening, often leaving patients with no choice but to undergo a stem cell transplant.
But here’s the challenge: only 30% of patients find a matching donor within their family, meaning the other 70% rely on unrelated donors (Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry, 2024). Yet, the odds of finding a perfect match can be as low as 1 in 1,000 to 1 in a million, depending on a patient’s genetic background (Be The Match, 2024).
Right now, there are thousands of Australians waiting for a donor, hoping for a second chance at life.
That’s why this National Bone Marrow Failure Syndrome Awareness Week (March 2–8, 2025) is so important. It’s a time to raise awareness of these devastating diseases and highlight the urgent need for more research, more donors, and more funding. 💙
